 OVERVIEW

The Atoms Initiation Program gives young players an opportunity to learn the sport of ice hockey in a supervised, developmental, and nurturing atmosphere. It is intended for the young player (1999 birth year or younger) who has completed the Learn-2-Skate and/or Learn-2-Play programs, or who has limited experience in ice hockey

The objectives of the Atoms Initiation Program is for the child to:

  • Learn the basic skills and rules of ice hockey.
  • Begin to understand the concepts of playing on a team.
  • Learn cooperation and fair play.
  • Engage in physical activity developing and refining motor skills.
  • However, the most important objective is TO HAVE FUN!!....

The structure of the program will be "clinic-style", focusing on skill development including skating, passing, puck handling, and shooting. Using "Border Patrol" rink dividers, that divides the ice surface into halves or thirds, lighter pucks, and sometimes smaller goals, we’ve shrunk the game of ice hockey into a sport that your child can learn to love at his or her own pace!

Divided into two 10-week sessions (fall & winter), individuals can sign up for either or both sessions. Each session will have 10 one-hour practices. Practices are combined so all players are on the ice at the same time. Each session will have a few in-house games, with the registrants divided equally into teams to play either cross-ice games or half ice games. If necessary, we will re-balance the in-house teams in the second session to accommodate new players, and to spread the stronger players throughout the teams.
